Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Who we are

The British Embassy in Vilnius is part of a world‑wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

Based in Vilnius and working as part of a satellite communications team of British Embassy Moscow, the Digital Media Officer will lead the Embassy’s digital communications delivery, overseeing content production, channel management, and performance across social media platforms targeting Russian audiences. The role is responsible for translating strategic communications priorities into effective digital campaigns, ensuring high-quality, impactful outputs aligned with UK government objectives.

The role reports to the Strategic Communications Officer and sits within the broader Press and Public Affairs section. The team works closely with policy colleagues, the Ambassador's office, and London-based communications teams to deliver timely, accurate, and engaging digital content that reaches Russian audiences.

What you will be doing

Content Creation and Social Media Management
  • Lead development and delivery of social media content in Russian and English for Embassy channels (Telegram, VK, Instagram, Facebook, X)
  • Draft, edit, and publish posts aligned with UK Government messaging and campaign objectives ensuring quality control, brand continuity and accessibility across Embassy channels
  • Design graphics and visual content using Canva (required) and Adobe Creative Suite (preferred)
  • Own and manage content calendars across channels, flagging potential communication opportunities in advance
  • Ensure content is cleared and signed off in a timely manner
  • Ensure that central assets are accessible and fittingly repurposed for Russian audiences

Multimedia Production
  • Lead & deliver multimedia production, coordinate filming with Assistant Digital Officer and other colleagues
  • Ensure production quality and timely delivery

Line Management
  • Manage and support Assistant Digital Officer in content creation and publishing, ensuring quality
  • Allocate Assistant Digital Officer’s tasks, set priorities and support learning & development;
  • Cover responsibilities of Assistant Digital Officer during leave

Monitoring & Evaluation
  • Review and optimise channel strategy based on media landscape developments and audience dynamics
  • Analyse and provide reports on Embassy's content performance, including comments and engagement
  • Provide updates on media landscape and trending developments on social media
  • Lead digital analytics and reporting (reach, engagement, impact) and translate data into actionable insights
  • Feed into wider team’s quarterly and ad hoc comms evaluation

Qualifications, skills and experience

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Full professional proficiency in English and Russian (written and spoken; minimum C1 under the CEFR framework*), with the ability to translate and draft clear, culturally appropriate content for Russian audiences
  • Proven experience managing social media accounts or digital channels professionally (graphics, short-form video, social posts) for social media platforms, ideally including Telegram, VK, Instagram, Facebook, and X
  • Experience delivering social media campaigns and using analytics to improve performance
  • Ability to work independently and make editorial judgements
  • Ability to use Canva confidently for graphics and basic video editing, with willingness and aptitude to learn Adobe Creative Suite tools (Photoshop, Premiere)
  • Excellent copywriting and editing skills, with the ability to adapt messaging for different platforms and audiences while maintaining accuracy and tone
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, including managing content calendars, balancing competing deadlines, and working at pace in a small team
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across comms, policy teams, and London-based partners to deliver coherent digital outputs
  • Understanding of social media best practice, audience behaviour, and trends relevant to Russian digital environments

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Basic video production skills, including familiarity with filming equipment, shoot support, and more advanced video editing (Adobe Premiere or similar)
  • Experience delivering digital campaigns, particularly for government, NGOs, media, or international organisations
  • Understanding of public sector communications or experience working in an international organisation
  • Ability to analyse social media performance data, identify insights, and adjust content strategy accordingly
  • Experience moderating online communities, handling comments, or identifying and flagging reputational risks
  • Creativity and initiative in proposing new content formats, story ideas, or engagement approaches for difficult to reach audiences
  • Familiarity with digital asset management systems and structured file organisation
  • Experience managing others

Other benefits and conditions

This is a full-time, 35 net hours per week, permanent contract, at Executive Officer (EO) grade.

Flexible working can be considered, a mix between office/home-based working is currently practice but increased presence in the office will be expected.

The start date indicated in the advert is an indicative date and may be brought forward or delayed depending on individual circumstances.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and probationary period.

While the role supports the work of the British Embassy Moscow, the postholder will be based in Vilnius. Therefore, all applicants should have the right to live and work in Lithuania. The British Embassy does not sponsor for work permits. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Vilnius are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Lithuanian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Lithuania and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
